Web 2.0 is the term which was introduced in 2004 and refers to the second generation of the World Wide Web. The term “2.0” comes from the software industry, where new versions of software programs are labeled with an incremental version number. Like software, the new generation of the Web includes new features and functionality that were not available in the past.
However, Web 2.0 does not refer to a specific version of the Web, but rather to a number of technological improvements.

The hype surrounding Web 2.0 can be unpleasant and confusing. Some veteran technologists even argue that Web 2.0 is little more than a catchy new name for a group of technologies that have been around for quite some time.
Both reviews are relevant to any manager who is evaluating Web 2.0 services for use within their company. The blurred nature of the term means that some marketers brand themselves “Web 2.0”, just to get attention – regardless of the degree to which their offer is really dynamic, interactive or built around accepted Web 2.0 protocols.
Meanwhile, the inflow of venture capital means that more and more Web 2.0 companies are entering the market – and not all will survive. Before making a substantial investment in a Web 2.0-based tool, do your due diligence to assess the risks and minimize your company’s exposure to unpleasant surprises.
